Biscuit picks: walking shoes

Meet the crew · The long way round · basset hound

Biscuit the basset hound in a mustard knitted scarf, nose to the ground on a leaf-covered village lane beside a mossy stone wall on a misty autumn morning, a red leash trailing behind him

Biscuit’s story

Biscuit walks the whole village every morning, and half the neighbors’ dogs with him. He never takes the same route twice, because he doesn’t pick the route. His nose does.

  • Has never once walked in a straight line.
  • Knows every bakery door by smell, and which ones open early.
  • Wears the mustard scarf from October to April. Nobody has seen him knit.

🎯 Biscuit’s hobby, and his surprise pick

Hobby: The long way round. A ten-minute walk to the post office takes him an hour and a half, and he says that’s the good part.

Surprise pick: Kurgo Zippy Bowl. A collapsible dog bowl that folds flat and clips on. Biscuit carries it for the younger dogs. He still drinks from every puddle himself.

Biscuit’s pick: walking shoes

“Buy shoes for the walk you’ll end up taking, not the one you planned. Mine always ends in a muddy field,” says Biscuit.

Biscuit’s pick: HOKA Transport 2. It was the only walking shoe on all three test sites’ lists, and it grips when the path turns to dirt.

Also good: HOKA Bondi SR, if your walks stay on hard, wet pavement and you want the most cushion.

Biscuit came to the river village as a puppy, following a smell from the next valley over. He never found out what it was. He liked the village so much he stayed, and he’s been looking for that smell ever since.

He sets off at seven every morning with a red leash in his mouth. He doesn’t need one, but the other dogs feel better if somebody is holding something.

Gerzsi likes walking with him because Biscuit always finds the bakery. Biscuit likes walking with Gerzsi because a beaver in clogs is the only walker in the village slower than a basset hound.

He has one rule. Never hurry a good smell. He says the walk isn’t about where you end up, and then he ends up at the bakery anyway.

Biscuit’s guide: Best walking shoes for everyday walks, with six pairs the testers wore on real walks.

Biscuit is made up, like everyone on the river except Chef Tamás. The gear and the test results are real.
