The apprentice (and narrator)
A young beaver from the upper river who wanted to cook more than he wanted to build dams. Eager, curious, and still tempted to use his teeth. Now Chef Tamás’s sous-chef in training.

The real head chef
The only real person here. 25 years in restaurants, hotels and a river cruise ship galley. Teaches with a nod, a knife and the occasional “Off the heat!” More about him.

Fellow apprentice, otter
Fast, funny and full of opinions. Can juggle three pairs of tongs. Can also drop one in the fryer. Guards the scraps bucket like a goalkeeper.

The miller, muskrat
Grinds the inn’s flour at the Old Mill and keeps half the river’s knives sharp. Has seen everything. Sighs accordingly.

The woodworker, hedgehog
Makes cutting boards at the Woodcutter’s Camp. Very proud of them. Counts them whenever Gerzsi visits.

The rival, raccoon
Cook on the Gilded Gravy steak barge. Owns fourteen gadgets and a pan that plays music. Believes he won the steak cook-off. He did not.

The baker, squirrel
Bakes the best walnut cookies on the river at the Bakery at the Bend. Will let Gerzsi cover a shift. Will not let him set the timer.

Granny Birch
Gerzsi’s grandmother
Has built more dams than anyone on the upper river. Gave Gerzsi a carved spoon, a map, and the push he needed.

Twig
Gerzsi’s little sister
Can fell a sapling before breakfast. Thinks her brother’s cooking is overrated. Ate nine pizzas anyway.

Everyone here except Chef Tamás is made up. Painted portraits of the new friends are on their way.
