Granny Birch’s story

Granny Birch has built more dams than anyone on the upper river. She gave Gerzsi a carved spoon, a map, and the push he needed.

  • Carves a new wooden spoon every winter.
  • Owns one heavy pot. It is older than Gerzsi.
  • Believes every problem can be solved with a dam or a stew.

Granny Birch has built more dams than anyone on the upper river, and she has opinions about every single one of them.

She also has opinions about teeth. “Your teeth are for wood,” she told Gerzsi when he announced he wanted to cook. “Real cooks use real tools.”

Then she packed him a bundle: a wooden spoon she had carved herself, a jar of dried mushrooms, and a river map with one spot circled in red. Riverbank Inn. Ask for the chef.

She came downriver once, for pizza night at the Lake House, and inspected Gerzsi’s stone plinth. She said it was the best thing he had built since he left home.

She still cooks one dish, slowly, in an old heavy pot, and she still won’t tell anyone what’s in it.
