Willa came to the river the year the mill pond froze solid. She never left. She says the fish here are polite. Gerzsi says they are just scared of her.

She doesn’t rush. She ties a knot, checks it, waits. When the line twitches she waits a little more. Then the fish is on the dock and she is already pouring tea.
Gerzsi likes fishing with her. Willa likes fishing with Gerzsi less, because he talks to the fish, sings to the fish, and once tried to help a fish by jumping in after it.
Still, she lends him her spare rod every time. She says that is how you make an angler. Very slowly, and with a towel nearby.
