Hettie’s story

Hettie runs the breakfast corner. She knows a great deal about eggs, and she has firm views on how they should be treated.

  • Has never dropped a pancake.
  • Cleans her spectacles before every lesson.
  • Counts the loops on every new whisk.

Hettie came to the inn to inspect the breakfast. She found it acceptable. She stayed to make it better.

She runs the breakfast corner now: pancakes, omelets, and a whisk she points at anyone who stirs too hard.

Her rules are short. A pan that doesn’t stick. A spatula that slides. A whisk with enough loops. “And gentle heat. Eggs are not in a hurry.”

When Gerzsi burned his first omelet, Hettie did not shout. She took off her spectacles, cleaned them slowly and put them back on. Gerzsi says that was much worse than shouting.

Clyde sells her favorite tools at the window. She checks every one before it goes on the shelf.
