Gerzsi’s top pick
Piscifun Fishing Tackle Backpack with 4 Trays. Outdoor Life’s gear editor picked a tackle bag as the best angler gift because “one thing that every angler needs is more tackle storage.” Wired2Fish’s tester wore this one for hours of fishing and wrote: “I credit the smart storage options for my happy back.”

Gerzsi’s shopping list: Last Christmas I gave Willa a fish. She ate it before I finished the bow. This year I asked her what anglers actually want. She said “more room for lures,” then “dry socks,” then “please stop giving me fish.” So here is the list, tested by people who fish more than I do. Which is everyone.
Gerzsi and friends are made up. The gear and the test results are real.
Buying for someone who fishes is hard. They already own a rod, and they have opinions about lures you will never understand. The safe bets are the things every angler uses on every trip: a place to keep tackle, a good reel, and small tools that live in a pocket. We didn’t test these ourselves. The picks come from Wired2Fish and Outdoor Life, linked below.
1. A tackle backpack (the gift they’ll use every trip)
Outdoor Life made a tackle bag (a Bass Pro Shops backpack) its “Best Gift” for anglers in 2025, because “one thing that every angler needs is more tackle storage” (Outdoor Life).
Top pick: Piscifun Fishing Tackle Backpack with 4 Trays

Wired2Fish’s tester took it on several trips and fished “for hours” with it on. The four double-sided trays fit long hard baits like jerkbaits, the side pockets hold soft plastics, and there is a hard sunglasses case, a drink holder, a pliers pocket and a rain cover that comes out in about six seconds. The tester said it is compact enough not to snag or get in the way of casting, and “I credit the smart storage options for my happy back.” The only wish: that Piscifun sold the trays separately (Wired2Fish).
Piscifun lists the main bag at 12.6 x 7.9 x 17.7 inches, made of water-resistant 1200D nylon, and warns that not every version comes with the trays, so check the listing before you buy (Piscifun).
Good for: bank and kayak anglers who walk to their spot. Not for: someone who keeps everything in a boat.
2. A better reel for about $40
Piscifun Viper X spinning reel

Wired2Fish named it the Best Budget Reel in its spinning reel guide: light, with a good drag, and it casts tiny crappie jigs well (Wired2Fish). Piscifun’s store listed it at $39.99 on October 22, 2026 (Piscifun). Gift tip: the Wired2Fish tester liked the 2000 size for panfish. The full comparison is in our budget spinning reel guide.

3. Stocking stuffers from $4

These four are all Outdoor Life stocking-stuffer picks from its 2025 angler gift guide. They are different kinds of things, so there is no table, just one line each. Prices are Outdoor Life’s, from October 29, 2025 (Outdoor Life).

4. For the angler who brings fish home
A good fillet knife is the one gift that turns a catch into dinner. We compared the tested ones in our fillet knife guide, and for someone just starting out, the beginner spinning combos are the whole kit in one box.
Fishing gift FAQ
Should I buy lures as a gift?
Only if you know exactly what they fish for and where. Lures are personal. Storage, a reel or a small tool fits almost anyone who fishes.
What size reel should I give?
For panfish and crappie, small: the Wired2Fish tester liked the 2000 size Viper X. If you don’t know what they fish for, our reel guide explains the sizes.
Does the backpack come with the trays?
Not every version does. Piscifun’s own listing says to check the backpack version before you buy, so look for “with 4 trays” in the name.
The bottom line
If you buy one thing, buy storage: the Piscifun tackle backpack. If they already have a bag, give the $40 Viper X reel. And if the budget is small, a $4 pair of line scissors and a hand scrub still say “I listened when you talked about fishing.”
