From the kitchen: Last week Gerzsi carried his knives to a friend’s dinner wrapped in a dish towel. Halfway there the towel came loose. Chef Tamás caught the boning knife before it hit the floor, looked at the beaver for a long time, and said only one thing: “A cook never carries loose blades.” Gerzsi now owns a knife case.

Gerzsi’s quick pick

Best for most cooks: Pikore’s Professional’s Leather Knife Roll. 3 to 16 slots, two lengths, an accessory pocket and a shoulder strap. From $170.

Spend less: the simpler Chefs Knife Roll, from $120. Culinary student with two knives: the Chefs Knife Case X2, $92.

The deal right now: Pikore’s site shows a free $65 leather wallet with every order (“limited time”), and the first item at full price with 20% off the rest. Their BBQ Roll Bag is marked down from $250 to $200. Shipping to the US is free.

A knife roll does one job: it gets sharp knives from one kitchen to another without dulling the edges, cutting the bag or cutting you. Cooks carry them to work, culinary students carry them to class, and anyone who cooks at a friend’s place for the holidays wishes they had one. Leather rolls also make one of the few kitchen gifts a cook keeps for years.

We haven’t tested Pikore’s rolls ourselves yet. The details below come from Pikore’s own product pages, checked October 29, 2026. Pikore makes leather goods to order in small batches; reviewers on their site mention the pieces ship from Ukraine.

Knife roll or knife bag?

A roll holds each blade in its own slot, rolls up and straps shut. It packs flat into a backpack or a locker. A bag is a case with compartments and a handle, better if you also carry a steel, a peeler, a thermometer and small tools every day. If you carry knives only, buy a roll.

How many slots do you need?

Count your knives, then add two or three slots for the small tools you grab every shift. Chef Tamás works with six knives: two chef’s knives, a santoku, a bread knife, a boning knife and a Japanese chef’s knife. On top of that, every shift he uses a small offset spatula, tongs and tweezers. That’s nine tools, so for a kit like his a 10-slot roll fits with one spare.

  • Home cook: 4 to 6 slots (chef’s knife, paring knife, bread knife, peeler, a spare).
  • Culinary student: 6 to 8 slots, or a two-knife case for the first weeks.
  • Working cook: 10 to 12 slots. Tools always multiply.

Length matters too. Measure your longest knife from the tip to the end of the handle. A 10-inch chef’s knife is close to 15 inches long in total. If yours gets near 15.7 inches, pick the 19.7-inch (50 cm) roll.

1. Professional’s Leather Knife Roll: the one most cooks start with

You choose the slot count (3 to 16), the length (15.7 or 19.7 inches) and one of five leather colors: green, black, brown, cognac or light cognac. It has an accessory pocket for a thermometer or pens, a buckle closure and an adjustable shoulder strap. Engraving or stamping (a name, initials or a logo) is $15 extra. It starts at $170 and has a one-year warranty. Pikore’s site shows a 5.0 average from 301 reviews; those are the store’s own reviews.

Good for: anyone who carries knives to work or class every week. Not for: one or two knives. That’s what the X2 case is for.

2. Chefs Knife Roll: simpler and cheaper

3, 5, 7 or 9 slots in one 16.1-inch length. A leather flap folds over the blades before the straps close it. From $120. It doesn’t come in the longer size, so check your longest knife first.

Good for: home cooks with up to nine tools. Not for: knives longer than about 16 inches in total.

3. Chefs Knife Case X2: for two knives

One piece of leather with two pockets and a snap. $92. Enough for a chef’s knife and a paring knife on the first weeks of culinary school, or for the one good knife you bring when you cook at someone else’s house. Gerzsi has this one now. The dish towel retired.

4. BBQ Roll Bag: the one on sale

Six slots and a zippered pocket for a thermometer or a rub, in the 15.7- or 19.7-inch height. Marked down from $250 to $200 when we checked. If the person you buy for lives at the grill more than at the stove, this is the better gift.

Chef Tamás’s note: Tamás is a real head chef with 25 years in professional kitchens. He hasn’t used a Pikore roll yet, so the details above are the maker’s, not his verdict. His rule is older than any roll: knives travel covered, edges never touch each other, and nobody reaches into a bag of loose blades.

Knife roll FAQ

Is leather better than canvas?

Leather is heavier and costs more, but it lasts and looks better with age. Canvas is lighter and cheaper. Pikore also sells a waxed canvas roll with leather trim, from $140.

How do I clean a leather knife roll?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry open. Always put knives in clean and dry. A wet blade in leather is how rust and smell start.

Is a knife roll a good gift for a cook?

Yes, if they already own knives they care about. Ask a friend how many knives they carry, or pick 8 to 10 slots and the longer size; extra room is never the problem. A name on it makes it theirs, but then it can’t be returned.

The bottom line

Count your knives, add two slots, measure the longest one. For most cooks that means the Professional’s roll with 8 to 12 slots. A student starts with the X2 case, a griller gets the BBQ roll while it’s $50 off.

No loose blades. Beaver’s orders.
