Ice fishing isn’t Chef Tamás’s field, so there is no chef’s note here. The picks are Piscifun’s own winter sale items; the advice on which reel type to choose comes from Outdoor Life and Field & Stream testers, and every source is linked.
The short version
Piscifun’s Ice Fishing Sale runs October 23 to November 14, 2026, with up to 50% off sitewide using the code AFF15. The best deal on the list is the Viper X spinning reel at $39.99 (was $79.99): it’s the reel Wired2Fish’s tester already liked on open water, and the 500 size is exactly what Outdoor Life recommends for a first panfish ice rod. If you jig a lot, the inline ICX Frost II Free Fall at $84.99 (was $119.99) is the bigger saving in dollars.

Gerzsi on the ice: Willa said winter fishing is “very calm.” She did not say the calm comes from standing in one spot for three hours while your tail freezes to the lake. She also did not say you need a reel that doesn’t turn into an ice cube. So I asked, and now there’s a list. The lake is still cold. The list is good.
Gerzsi and friends are made up. The gear, the prices and the sale dates are real.
Piscifun put its winter line on sale early this year. Six items are marked down, and Piscifun’s affiliate code AFF15 is live until November 14. Below is what each one is, what it costs today, and (because we did not fish with them on ice) what independent testers say about the reel type you are choosing between.
First, spinning or inline?
This is the only real decision. A spinning reel is the one you already know from summer: fast, easy, and cheap. An inline reel sits under the rod with the spool facing forward, so the line comes straight off without twisting. Outdoor Life’s Cory Schmidt writes that the twist from a spinning reel makes tiny jigs spin unnaturally, which picky panfish notice, and he suggests beginners start with a 500-size spinning reel and try an inline later (Outdoor Life). Field & Stream’s Derrek Sigler says the same thing from the other side: inlines are worth it if you fish jigs a lot, but they have a learning curve (Field & Stream).
So: first winter, or mostly bait and bigger fish? Spinning. Jigging for perch, crappie and bluegill all day? Inline.
1. Viper X spinning reel (500 or 1000): $39.99, was $79.99
Half price, and the only reel on this list that an independent tester has already used. Wired2Fish’s tester fished the Viper X on open water and liked it for casting tiny crappie jigs; we wrote that up in our budget spinning reel guide. Piscifun lists it with a 5.2:1 gear ratio and 10+1 bearings. For the ice, get the 500 size: that is the size Outdoor Life recommends for crappie, bluegill and perch, and a shallow spool means less line to buy.
2. Carbon X ultralight spinning reel (500 or 1000): from $57.99, was $79.99
The lighter, nicer version of the same idea: a carbon body, so it weighs less in a gloved hand and the frame gets less cold than metal (Outdoor Life’s one complaint about its metal-bodied top pick was exactly that). Same size advice: 500 for panfish, 1000 if walleye are on the menu. If the $18 difference doesn’t matter to you, this is the better everyday reel; if it does, the Viper X is fine.
3. ICX Carbon II inline reel: $69.99
and 4. ICX Frost II Carbon Free Fall: $84.99, was $119.99
These are the inlines. Both have a magnetic brake that lets you dial in how fast the jig drops, and a trigger that releases the spool so the lure falls straight down instead of being cranked out. The ICX Carbon II is the plain version. The Frost II adds a spool cover against tangles, a bite clicker and a bigger 2.48-inch spool, and it carries the biggest discount of the sale (29% off). Neither has been through an independent ice test that we could find, so we are quoting Piscifun’s own specs here; the only independent voice is on the reel type, above. If you want the inline advantage and plan to fish a lot of days, the Frost II is the one the discount favors.
5. Ice fishing suit, 3-in-1 heated jacket and bib: from $149.99, was $199.99
Willa’s actual tip was “dry and warm beats everything you own.” This is a jacket with a zip-in heated layer plus waterproof bibs, sold as one set, in black/grey or camo. We have not worn it and no outside tester we trust has reviewed it yet, so take it as what it is: a $50 discount on a full suit from a brand whose reels anglers do rate. Check the size chart before you order.
How to use the code
Add the item to your cart on piscifun.com, then enter AFF15 at checkout before November 14. Piscifun says codes can’t be combined with other codes or gift promotions, so use this one and ignore the newsletter popup.
Ice fishing sale FAQ
Which reel if I only buy one?
The Viper X 500 at $39.99. It is the cheapest, it is the only one with an independent test behind it, and both Outdoor Life and Field & Stream say a 500-size spinning reel is the right first ice reel.
Can I use my summer spinning reel on the ice?
Yes, if it is small. The Outdoor Life tester’s panfish ice reel is a 500-size Shimano Sedona, the same reel many people fish in summer. Big summer reels are the problem: too much line, too much weight on a 24-inch rod.
Is an inline reel harder to use?
A little. You drop the jig with the trigger instead of flipping a bail, and you need to set the magnetic brake. Field & Stream’s tester calls it a learning curve, not a wall.
The bottom line
Buy the Viper X 500 if this is your first winter or your budget is $40. Buy the ICX Frost II if you jig every weekend and want the inline advantage at its lowest price. The suit is a fair discount but an untested one. And whatever you pick, the code is AFF15 and the clock stops November 14.
